American Red Cross -- Marion County (OH) Chapter

The Chapter received its original Charter from the American National Red Cross on May 16, 1917.  The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement.

The American Red Cross -- Marion County (Ohio) Chapter has four areas of emphasis:
                              1) Disaster Services,
                              2) Health & Safety Services,
                              3) Biomedical Services, and
                              4) Services to Armed Forces.

The Marion County Chapter House -- also known as The Alber Red Cross Cross Center -- is located at 1849 Summerset Drive, Marion, OH 43302.

Office hours: 8:30 a.m. -- noon & 1 p.m. -- 4 p.m., Mon. through Thu. Phones are monitored for emergencies after hours and on weekends and holidays.

Local Chapter operations are guided by a volunteer board of trustees, representing a cross-section of organizations and neighborhoods within the community. A small paid staff performs administrative duties. Annually, several hundred registered volunteers share their time and talents to help the Marion County Chapter Red Cross Chapter make our community safer, healthier, better prepared for emergencies and more responsive to those in need.

Although the American Red Cross cooperates with government at many levels and has been given certain responsibilities by the United States Congress, it is not a government agency. The organization is primarily supported by monetary and in-kind donations from individuals, businesses and other organizations.

The Marion County Chapter is a 501(c)(3) charity and currently relies on the following to fund most of its activities:
                              1) Financial and in-kind gifts from individuals, families and organizations in our community,
                              2) Investment earnings from a share of the Alber Trust, administered by The Columbus Foundation,
                              3) Proceeds from United Way of Marion County's annual campaign, earmarked specifically for local Disaster Services, and
                              4) Revenue generated by one major annual fundraising event -- the WMRN/WYNT American Red Cross Radiothon, held the second Thursday in May.

The Marion County Chapter sells a variety of health and safety products. Items include: CPR pocket masks and face shields, first-aid kits for use in different settings, disaster preparedness backpacks, and hand-crank emergency radios. Additional products may be purchased by special order. Retail sales serve two purposes. While households, businesses and organizations get the gear they need to respond to emergencies, proceeds from these sales help support local Chapter operations.
