January is National Blood Donor Month
Honor blood donors, sponsor blood drives, encourage others to give
January is the perfect time to honor the people who help others through the simple act of giving blood.
Since 1970, January has been known as National Blood Donor Month. It’s a time when blood organizations like the American Red Cross pay tribute to the nearly 11 million people who give blood each year, and encourage others to start the New Year off right by coming to give the gift of life.
“Blood donors bring hope and promise to hospital patients who may need blood for their very life,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region. “Donors are people like you who play a vital role in modern health care by helping ensure hospitals have blood for patients.”
January is a challenging time for blood donation because cold and snowy weather and busy post-holiday schedules can make it difficult for blood donors to keep appointments. Regardless of the time of year, hospital patients nationwide need about 44,000 blood donations daily for cancer care, surgeries, and the treatment of serious diseases and trauma.
The Red Cross encourages donors to make and keep appointments, both for convenience and to reinforce the feeling of commitment. Community members can also contribute to the blood supply by organizing or volunteering at a blood drive, or by suggesting blood donation to their family and friends.
“If volunteering in your community is on your list of resolutions, you can meet it by simply giving blood or recruiting others to give, too,” said Wilson. “Donating blood is a great way to make a lifetime of difference in just a little more than an hour’s worth of your time.”
How to Donate Blood
To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. If you are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in Ohio), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to show positive identification.
About the American Red Cross
The Central Ohio Blood Services Region serves 27 counties, and needs 800 blood donors each day to meet patient needs in 41 hospitals. In addition to providing blood to our community, the American Red Cross also provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.

Timothy Lutheran Church to host year-end blood drive
MARION, OH – TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH will host a blood drive on Friday, December 30th. Collection hours will run from noon until 6 p.m. The church is located at 3004 Marion-Mount Gilead Rd. (Route 95 E.). This drive replaces one previously announced for that date at bluefusion® Entertainment.
The drive is open to the public. Priority will be given to donors who arrive on-time for their appointments. However, walk-ins and donors with appointments who arrive at other times will be welcomed whenever the schedule permits. To make an appointment for this or other drives, call – toll-free – 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors may also book appointments for many drives online at www.redcrossblood.org. The Marion County Red Cross can also assist with setting appointments. Call 740-725-9141, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Almost always in short supply, blood often becomes increasingly scarce around the holidays. With competing demands for their time, some regular donors put off giving at this time of year, even though the entire process usually takes 60 minutes or less. The onset of cold and flu season causes other donors to be deferred temporarily. Adverse weather conditions may depress turnout at drives. These factors that put a dent in donations can be magnified when bad weather and heavy holiday travel cause traffic accidents – and the need for blood -- to spike.
In addition to the collection at Timothy Lutheran, blood drives will also be conducted at the following locations in the coming weeks:
8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, December 19, Marion Catholic High School, 1001 Mount Vernon Ave.
Noon to 6 p.m., Monday, December 19, Marion Family YMCA – Wopat YMCA Center, 645 Barks Rd. E.
1 to 7 p.m., Thursday, December 22, Lowe’s , 1840 Marion-Mount Gilead Rd.
9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, December 30, Community Healthcare Center, 175 Community Dr.
11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, December 31, CiCi’s Pizza, 1677 Marion-Mount Gilead Rd., Suite 100. This drive is being co-sponsored by CiCi’s and Clear Channel of Marion.
CiCi’s Pizza of Marion continues to reward every Marion County blood donor with a coupon for a free 7” personal “Pizza-to-Go.” Contact the restaurant at 740-386-2191 for complete details.
Additional incentives are also being offered at many central Ohio drives through year-end. Donors attending drives throughout the region may enter a free raffle with a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree from Easton in northeast Columbus, along with an overnight stay at the Hilton at Easton.
Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. Blood transfusions are used for trauma victims, heart surgery, organ transplants, women suffering from complications of childbirth, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, sickle cell disease, cancer and other serious conditions.
The Central Ohio Region of the Red Cross encompasses 27 counties – including Marion County – and assists patients at 41 area hospitals. The region needs approximately 650 donors daily to maintain the supply.
Under normal circumstances, a donor can give one unit of whole blood every 56 days (8 weeks) or double red cells every 112 days (16 weeks).
Components derived from a single unit of whole blood may be used to help as many as three different patients.
Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Ohio), who weigh at least 110 pounds, and who are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Each prospective donor should bring a Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID to the drives they attend.
Donors with questions about their eligibility to give blood (such as medications they may be taking, their health history, or the height and weight requirements for donors under 19), may call the Red Cross Donor Suitability unit at 1-866-426-0922.
